Outdoor Electrical Safety Tips

As we spend more time outdoors during the warm summer months it’s important to understand the common outdoor electrical hazards present around the home.

  1. Always keep power equipment and yourself at least 10 feet away from power lines. Electricity can jump to nearby objects.
  2. Before digging in the year call 811 to learn the location of buried underground power lins and other utilities.
  3. Ensure that all outside outlets have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) installed to automatically turn off the power if a plugged in item comes in contact with water.
  4. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning never use a gas powered portable power generator indoors or near an area where fumes could enter the house.
  5. Make sure your generator is properly grounded.
  6. Extension cords should be used for short term power needs only.
  7. Make sure extension cords used outdoors are label “For Outdoor Use”.
  8. Protect outdoor outlets with weatherproof covers.
