Holiday LIghting Safety Tips

Many families enjoy decorating their homes inside and out to brighten their neighborhood and celebrate the holiday season. As with any electrical lighting or accessories, it’s important to ensure that they are installed correctly to reduce the risk of electrical shock and fires. Here are a few tips from The National Fire Protection Association to avoid some of the most common electrical hazards in and around the home.

  • Don’t string too many lights together. Check light strings to see how many strings can be safely joined end to end. As a rule of thumb, don’t string together more than three midgets (push-in bulbs); strings with screw-in bulbs (C7s and C9s) should have a maximum of 50 bulbs total
  • Inspect electrical accessories before installation – Before stringing lights, inspect for cracked sockets, frayed, loose or bare wires or loose connections
  • Always unplug light strings before replacing bulbs or fuses
  • Always turn off electric decorations before leaving home or going to bed, and be sure all smoke detectors are in working order
  • Don’t Use high wattage bulbs in low-wattage ornaments
  • Avoid overloading extension cords
  • Never run extension cords through water, even those labeled for outdoor use
  • Brown or brittle needles are prone to fire, so always buy a fresh wreath or tree. Place the tree in a no-tip stand, and keep it watered. With an artificial tree, make sure it’s flame-retardant. Place your tree at least 3 ft. from the fireplace or any other heat source
  • Replace damaged ornament parts with matching parts. Bulbs with too-high wattage are a fire hazard

Clover Electric can make setting up holiday lighting displays safer and easier. Reduce the need for long extension cords with new GFCI outlets. Avoid tripping circuit breakers by having your electrical panel inspected to ensure it’s up to the task of powering your indoor and outdoor electrical displays.
